Long login times - We are currently experiencing long login times due to the primary DNS server being down. This server serves the math, cs, and physics departments. Logging in could take up to a minute, but should go through. The CEC is currently working on the problem and we hope to have the issue resolved soon. -Mathlab System Administrator 5/27/2008 9:50am.

Welcome to the Michigan Tech Mathlab Mediawiki.

This page is designed to help provide an organized structure for information about the mathlab.

[edit] Userid and Password

To log in to the mathlab mediawiki, you need to use your MTU ISO userid and password. The same goes for any secure pages having to do with the mathlab that ask for MTU Authentication.

Here you can register for the lab portion of your calculus course. You will have to sign in with your MTU ISO password if you haven't done so already. If you do not register for a lab section, your grade will be reported as 0.

[edit] Mathematica

Thanks to a special agreement between MTU and Wolfram Research, current MTU students may download a free copy of Mathematica for use on their home computer. This way students can do their labs at home. (Quizzes still need to be done in the labs.)

Currently, the labs are using Mathematica version 6.0.1. You should download this version from the link below.

Click here to download your free copy of Mathematica. You will be prompted for your ISO userid and password.

[edit] Batch-queuing using Sun Grid Engine (Grad Level)

The Sun Grid Engine (SGE) allows the student to submit a program to be run and the SGE will allocate an unused processor or processors to execute the program. Our SGE uses the 45 lab computers plus 8 faculty/grad computers, most of which have dual-core processors, to distribute the workload of the submitted jobs.

The labs are located on the third floor in Fisher Hall. (Building 15 on the campus map.)

The mathlab is open from 11am - 3pm Monday through Thursday during the summer. Please check the schedules below for more detailed information.

Consultants Schedule

When the lab is open, there should be a consultant on duty who may be wandering around the labs, seeing if any students need help, or at the desk in the main lab (room 331). If the lab is open, but nobody is working, please Report It! (you will be asked to sign in)

[edit] Recovering deleted or overwritten files.

Files that have existed overnight can be recovered because we do a daily backup of home directories. If it was something that was just created and deleted and emptied from the trash, all in one day, then there is no way to recover it.

[edit] Firefox won't open, says it's already open.

This seems to occur at random, but here's a (hopefully) simple enough fix.

Open a terminal window.
- Right-click on the desktop and select "Open Terminal" from the pop-up menu.
Type in the following command and then press enter:
- rm ~/.mozilla/firefox/*/{lock,.parentlock}
Try to restart Firefox. If this doesn't work, and you don't care if you lose your settings (such as bookmarks, history, etc), type the following command:
- rm -rf ~/.mozilla

For help with the programs in the lab (WebCT, Mathematica, OpenOffice, etc.), ask one of the lab consultants on duty. If no consultant is present, you can check here to see when a consultant will be present.

[edit] Personal Web Page

Mathlab accounts come with a blank webpage which you can personalize. The web address is:

http://www.mathlab.mtu.edu/~userid

Simply replace the "userid" with your own userid. (If your mtu email was "yberra@mtu.edu" then your userid would be yberra, and hence, your mathlab webpage address would be: "http://www.mathlab.mtu.edu/~yberra")

The file is "public_html/index.html" on your account. The easiest way to edit your page is to use Nvu.

Click on the fedora (f) button on the task bar in the lower left corner of your screen.
Select "Programming".
Then select "Nvu Web Authoring Tool".

Note: Since the public page is in the mtu.edu domain, inappropriate material will not be tolerated and may result in academic repercussions.
