[edit] Mathlab Policies

Due to the large number of students in the lab, we must operate according to and enforce some simple and consistent policies concerning exercises, due dates, and grades.

[edit] Registration

To provide more flexibility and keep the size of lab sections at less than 25 the MathLab now allows you to schedule lab sections at a wide variety of times. There are labs sections from aproximately 8am to 8pm Monday through Thursday and Friday 8am-5pm. (Lab Schedule):

  • Monday and Tuesday are mainly Calc II
  • Wednesday is mainly Calc III
  • Thursday and Friday are mainly Calc I (Ma1160 and Ma1161 are now combined)

The additional flexibility enables the MathLab to provide:

  • Special sections for novice Mathematica users in Calc II and Calc III.
  • An alternate grading scheme available to students repeating the lab.

[edit] Assignments and Quizzes

MathLab weekly assignments consists of three parts. Most weeks during the semester there is:

  • A lab to complete and hand in.
  • A "Long" 30 minute WebCT quiz testing you over material from the lab and previous weeks.
    • Best score counts, Infinite retakes, unsupervised.
  • A "Short" 8 minute WebCT quiz consistsing of a few questions very similar to those from the "Long" quiz.
    • Single attempt, supervised in Fisher 331 during your lab section.

[edit] Grades

MathLab grades reported to your instructor will be based on the following formulae.

  • For students taking the lab for the first time:
    • 30% Labs
    • 30% Long Quizzes
    • 40% Short Quizzes (best 7 scores)
  • For students repeating the labs:
    • 50% Long Quizzes
    • 50% Short Quizzes (best 7 scores)

[edit] Late Assignments

  • Late labs will be accepted by lab TA's when presented with formal documentation.
  • Makeup "Long" quizzes will be available during the last week of classes.
  • Only the best 7 "Short" quizzes are used in your grade. Make up "Short" quizzes are not available.

[edit] Academic Integrity

  • Violations of the MTU Academic Integrity policy will be reported directly to the Dean of Students. There are some specific policies relevant to the MathLab.

[edit] Due Dates

  • Labs are due by 3pm on the listed due date.
  • The deadline for WebCT quizzes is available on WebCT.

[edit] Submitting Labs

  • The information (particularly the barcode) on the front of your assignement must be complete, correct, and legible.
  • All exercises must be handed to either your Lab TA or the Lab Consultant in 331.
    • The barcode is scanned and you get an automatic email confirmation
  • All late assignments require official documented excuses (such as a doctor's note).

[edit] Grades

  • Quiz grades are recorded on WebCT.
  • Lab grades are recorded at https://www.math.mtu.edu/mathlab/grades/ .
    • You are notified by Email when your lab grades are recorded.
  • Graded material is returned to the file cabinets in the lab.
